While his departure has been described as a split in the Likud, it is actually a split in both Likud and Labor. Something that Sharon had always planned on and worked to bring about. With both parties broken, Sharon will create a ruling party much as Putin has done in Russia. Those from the left and right who have joined Sharon's party will be tossed away the moment they cease to be of use. The outcome will be a party ruled by and answerable to Sharon alone, all but eliminating the legislative branch as a meaningfull force. The end result is tyranny. So OK, let's give the good Sultan points for a laudable concern with preserving democracy and note that a more tentative and frankly speculative tone would have made this an interesting "here is one way of seeing things" post instead of the Birchy thing it unfortunately comes across as.
