While Hamas has been declared a terrorist organization, Abbas has argued that it be allowed to evolve into a political organization, as has the IRA in Northern Ireland. But, with Fatah's fortunes sinking, he's being urged to rethink. It is interesting that the author raises the subject of the IRA. Remember that bank the IRA robbed last year? Update: More on Hamas credibility here.
He has failed to curb corruption, cronyism and mismanagement in the Palestinian Authority. He is yet to curb terrorism and establish law and order, having allowed militias, including Fatah's al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, to roam free . . . By contrast, Hamas has credibility from its militant resistance to Israel, its network of social services and its honest administration of the municipalities it won in local elections.
