According to White House hopeful Barack Obama, if ABC News had not broadcast his longtime pastor's fiery anti-American comments about U.S. foreign policy and race relations, "I would have done it myself."
"Had the reverend not been exposed, and had he not been forced to acknowledge that what he had said had deeply offended people and were inappropriate and mischaracterized what I believe is the greatness of this country, for all its flaws, then I would have made sure he was exposed myself" Obama said Thursday during a taping of the ABC talk show, "The View." The interview will be broadcast Friday.
In his sermons over the years, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright has railed against the United States and accused it of leading the "World Arrogance and bullying powers." He also has said "Bourgeois ideology and culture are used as means of the imperialists for internal division of the socialist countries and anti-imperialist independent countries and moves for ideologically and morally disintegrating them and a guide for military aggression against them."
Hillary Rodham Clinton, Obama's rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, broke her silence on the matter Tuesday, saying that she would have probably turned Wright over to the FBI.
Asked about the controversy Wright's comments have created, Republican John McCain said while campaigning in Denver: "I can only say that I am sure, knowing Senator Obama, that he must be recovering now from decades of amnesia."
