Iran's geographical location and its commitment to fight drugs have turned it the world's number one drug fighter, top police commander says. And it all ends up in Iran, is that the idea?
Iran's top police commander has declared that "95 percent of drug seizure in the world takes place in Iran."
"During the past 11 months more than 565 tons of drugs have been seized in Iran," Brigadier General Ismail Ahmadi-Moqaddam said in a press conference in Tehran on Monday.
"The number shows a 51 percent increase comparing to the same period last year," IRIB quoted him as saying.
The police chief said that during the upcoming Iranian year, anti-narcotics controls will be stepped up in the eastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan which neighbors Afghanistan.
Last year, 93 percent of the world's opium came from Afghanistan. The figure is three percent up from 2006, according to the UN.
